Acne Vulgaris Treatment Therapy
Skin Rejuvenation for Acne Vulgaris Treatment Therapy f.a.q.s
An alternative remedy to treating acne, helping rid bacteria and stimulating the skin to promote a natural healing response.
What is an intense pulsed light/IPL?
It is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure using a flash lamp light source which emits a broad spectrum, high intensity, visible light generating heat within the skin.
In this case the IPL primarily heats & destroys light sensitive molecules, (‘tiny building blocks’) inside P. Acnes bacteria cells that contribute to the cause & inflammation associated with acne.
IPL can be effective in heating & slowing down hyperactive sebaceous glands which produce the sebum (oil) in our skin.
Reducing oiliness can improve the texture & condition of the skin & decrease acne lesions.
Is this treatment suitable for everyone?
IPL is generally suitable for light to medium skin types as a darker skin may absorb too much light energy & are more at risk of burns or pigmentation changes.
During the consultation the clients skin type is determined by using a method known as the ‘Fitzpatrick Scale.’ This method classifies the clients skin pigmentation on how the skin responds to sun exposure. It ranges from Type I to Type VI. This is explained in the consultation.
A skin patch test is performed during the consultation which is required to set parameters & determine the comfort & effectiveness on the skin.
It is advisable to wait 24-48 hours prior to treatment depending on skin type.
Clients under the age of 16 need parental consent & in some cases a letter from their GP.
Medications, ongoing illnesses & treatments may affect a clients suitability; therefore, it is important to gain accurate information during the consultation.
What effect does this have on the skin?
The light energy can target two different aspects of the condition.
The light is converted to heat & absorbed by a specific molecule inside P Acnes bacteria cells causing destruction of the cells & effective reduction on the oil producing sebaceous glands.
The appearance of the skin after treatment may appear red like a mild sunburn. This is a normal reaction to the treatment & will reduce within 24 hours.
What are the results of this treatment?
This can vary between clients as dependent on the individual & responses may vary.
The results can be less breakouts, improvements in skin tone & texture & reduced redness & inflammation.
The pulsed light stimulates collagen production which enhances the overall appearance of the skin.
Following the aftercare recommendations & using professional skincare will assist in the results.
How many sessions are required?
This can vary with each individual client. A typical number varies from 3-6 treatments depending on the severity of the acne, skin type & tolerance/sensitivity to the IPL treatment.
Allowing 3-4 weeks between a series of sessions is a typical timescale to allow the skin to heal & the treatment to be effective.
The number of sessions are based on your specific needs.
Maintenance sessions may be required.
Does it hurt?
Most clients say there is minimal discomfort.
Experiences recorded are a heat & tingling sensation or a brief pin prick & any discomfort is usually brief. Any concerns can be discussed prior to treatment.
A clear cooling gel is applied to the areas prior to treatment improving the efficiency of the light energy into the skin & acts as a cooling barrier for client comfort.
What is the downtime of this treatment?
There is minimal downtime.
Clients can experience mild redness & swelling but this usually subsides shortly after treatment. In some cases, temporary darkening or crusting may occur on treated pigmented areas but this is part of the healing process & resolves on its own.
A suitable cooling gel is applied after the treatment to calm & hydrate the skin.
Aftercare instructions are discussed in depth during the consultation & reminded to the client after treatment.
How much does the treatment cost?
Varies as dependent on size of area to be treated. Minimal cost $85 for half face. Clinic deals on offer will over ride minimal cost where applicable.
How long does each session take?
Including preparation time, the minimum visit takes 20-30 minutes.
If make up has to be removed this requires additonal time.
