Rejuvenation
for Hyperpigmentation

IPL Skin Rejuvenation for Hyperpigmentation f.a.q.s

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. These lasers stimulate the growth of new skin cells, helping to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

What is an intense pulsed light/IPL?

It is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure using a flash lamp light source which emits a broad spectrum, high intensity, visible light generating heat within the skin.

In this case the heat targets & is absorbed by the overproduction of  melanin cells which are causing the hyperpigmented areas.

Is this treatment suitable for everyone?

IPL is generally suitable for light to medium skin types as a darker skin may absorb too much light energy & are more at risk of burns or pigmentation changes.

During the consultation the clients skin type is determined by using a method known as the ‘Fitzpatrick Scale.’ This method classifies the clients skin pigmentation on how the skin responds to sun exposure. It ranges from Type I to Type VI. This is explained in the consultation.

A skin patch test is performed during the consultation which is required to set parameters & determine the comfort & effectiveness on the skin.

It is advisable to wait 24-48 hours prior to treatment depending on skin type.

Clients under the age of 16 need parental consent & in some cases a letter from their GP.

Medications, ongoing illnesses & treatments may affect a clients suitability; therefore, it is important to gain accurate information during the consultation.

What effect does this have on the skin?

The IPL penetrates the skin & targets the melanin pigment on the surface & underlying layers of the skin. The melanin in the skin will absorb the light which converts to heat & begin the process of breaking down the pigmented cells for the body to naturally eliminate over time.

The pigmentation can appear darker due to the melanin cells rising to the surface, but this is usually only temporary.

What are the results of this treatment?

This can vary between clients as dependent on the individual & type of pigmentation being treated but typically changes can be noted after a week. The pigment has to shed from the surface therefore other treatments such as *microdermabrasion can speed up the process & are usually performed before IPL or approximately 2 weeks after the treatment.

(*Microdermabrasion is performed by the use of a device which gently exfoliates the skin.)

There may be some slight reddening of the skin after the treatment which is a natural response & should reduce within a couple of hours to a couple of days.

Following the aftercare advice & using good quality effective skincare will assist the results.

How many sessions are required?

A typical amount can be from 3-6 treatments, but this can vary with each individual client. It is dependent on the type & severity of the pigment, skin type, sensitivity & treatment goals.

Allowing 3-4 weeks between sessions is a typical timescale to give the skin time to heal & the pigment to shed.

Does it hurt?

Most clients say there is minimal discomfort.

Experiences recorded are a heat & tingling sensation or a brief pin prick & any discomfort is usually brief. Any concerns can be discussed prior to treatment.

A clear cooling gel is applied to the areas prior to treatment improving the efficiency of the light energy into the skin & acts as a cooling barrier for client comfort.

What is the downtime of this treatment?

There is minimal downtime.

Clients can experience mild redness & swelling but this usually subsides shortly after treatment. A suitable cooling gel is applied after the treatment to calm & hydrate the skin.

Aftercare instructions are discussed in depth during the consultation & reminded to the client after treatment.

How much does the treatment cost?

Varies as dependent on size of area to be treated. Minimal cost $85 for half face. Clinic deals on offer will over ride minimal cost where applicable.

How long does each session take?

Including preparation time, the minimum visit takes 20-30 minutes.

If make up has to be removed this requires additonal time.
