Skin Rejuvenation for
Vascular Lesions

Skin Rejuvenation for
Vascular Lesions – rosacea, & telangiectasis aka spider veins f.a.q's

What is an intense pulsed light/IPL?

It is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure using a flash lamp light source which emits a broad spectrum, high intensity, visible light generating heat within the skin.

In this case the IPL is absorbed by targeting specific tiny blood vessels in the skin caused by telangiectasis/spider veins & rosacea.

Is this treatment suitable for everyone?

IPL is generally suitable for light to medium skin types as a darker skin may absorb too much light energy & are more at risk of burns or pigmentation changes.

During the consultation the clients skin type is determined by using a method known as the ‘Fitzpatrick Scale.’ This method classifies the clients skin pigmentation on how the skin responds to sun exposure. It ranges from Type I to Type VI. This is explained in the consultation.

A skin patch test is performed during the consultation which is required to set parameters & determine the comfort & effectiveness on the skin.

It is advisable to wait 24-48 hours prior to treatment depending on skin type.

Clients under the age of 16 need parental consent & in some cases a letter from their GP.

Medications, ongoing illnesses & treatments may affect a clients suitability; therefore, it is important to gain accurate information during the consultation.

What effect does this have on the skin?

The light energy heats & damages the dilated tiny blood vessels causing the blood to coagulate i.e., change into a more solid state. This may cause the vessels to become darker after the treatment & is a temporary discoloration which will gradually fade. This is all part of the healing process.

What are the results of this treatment?

This can vary between clients as dependent on the individual & responses may vary. Optimal results are a gradual fading & improvement over time with the reduction in visible blood vessels & a decrease in red or flushed areas. The overall skin tone may also improve.

There may be slight reddening & swelling in the treated area after the treatment which is a natural response & should reduce within a few hours to a few days.

Following the aftercare advice & using good quality effective skincare will assist the results.

How many sessions are required?

This can vary with each individual client depending on the condition & severity of the condition being treated, & the skins response.

Usually, multiple sessions are required as telangiectasia & rosacea often involve a network of blood vessels which require targeting & treating the affected areas thoroughly for optimal results.

The number of sessions are based on your specific needs.

Maintenance sessions may be required.

Does it hurt?

Most clients say there is minimal discomfort.

Experiences recorded are a heat & tingling sensation or a brief pin prick & any discomfort is usually brief. Any concerns can be discussed prior to treatment.

A clear cooling gel is applied to the areas prior to treatment improving the efficiency of the light energy into the skin & acts as a cooling barrier for client comfort.

What is the downtime of this treatment?

There is minimal downtime.

Clients can experience mild redness & swelling but this usually subsides shortly after treatment. A suitable cooling gel is applied after the treatment to calm & hydrate the skin.

Aftercare instructions are discussed in depth during the consultation & reminded to the client after treatment.

How much does the treatment cost?

Varies as dependent on size of area to be treated. Minimal cost $85 for half face. Clinic deals on offer will over ride minimal cost where applicable.

How long does each session take?

Including preparation time, the minimum visit takes 20-30 minutes.

If make up has to be removed this requires additonal time.
